The sweet age of 17-20 months can be kind of a challenge when it comes to finding the right toys that early toddlers will want to play with (at least it was for me!). 😜 At 16-17 months, my daughter was still reluctantly playing with her stacking cups and shape cube. I also still had all her smaller toys out from her baby months which she barely touched. I couldn’t hardly wait for Christmas to arrive so that she could be gifted some newer (more her age) toys:) But I had to figure out what kinds of things she was interested in.
She just started getting into the shows: Sesame Street, Bubble Guppies, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and Winnie the Pooh. (I didn’t really let her watch TV until she was 16 months). She became OBSESSED with all these characters – especially Elmo!
I also noticed that around 16-17 months, she would start asking for a cup and spoon (shah-veh as she called it ☺️) to play with. She pretended to stir and drink out of the cup from watching my husband and me. I also noticed that any time there was a pencil or crayon around, she would try and use it – on any piece of paper she could! LOL! And above all else, she LOVED to read her books and be read to. I started reading to her at about 4-5 months, and the love of books has now been ingrained into her which I’m so thrilled about!
Christmas was a wonderful success in the toy department, and she’s been having a blast with all her new things!! So, without further ado…here are my daughter’s top seven favorite toys (items) for 17-20 months! 😄🙌🏻
Picnic Basket and Food Items

You can find this one or others like it on Amazon for a decent price! (Link below) Don’t forget to buy extra food items as well for more playing options (I have shown a bunch here that didn’t come with the basket set. You can see that my daughter has munched on a few of these, too! lol)

A Princess Castle (or house) with Figurines
My sister found this particular Fisher-Price castle at Kohls, but you can also buy it on Amazon (link below). It comes with Cinderella, Rapunzel, a magic wand and a little bed. It lights up, plays music, and my daughter just LOVES the little mirror inside the upstairs room.❤️ She calls it (“I sock-ee” which means “I see you”).☺️

Baby Doll Set

This is the one my mother-in-law got her for Christmas! It is by the company GIGO, but I couldn’t find this particular one, so I linked a couple similar ones below. I am due in May with our little boy, and my daughter keeps pointing to my tummy and saying, “baby’s inside?”😂 She just loves babies – pictures, videos, you name it! So, she has been loving taking care of this little doll! She’s gonna be such a great big sister to her little brother.💕

Figurines
My daughter absolutely adores her Mickey and Elmo figurines! There is something about the smallness that makes them so easy to play with and bring to life for a 17-20 month old. And these are two of her favorite TV shows, so it’s a win-win! I’ve also been meaning to get the Winnie the Pooh figurines as well. You can find both of these on Amazon. You can also purchase the Mickey set at Walmart and the Elmo set at Target. (Links below)

Mess – free Coloring and Old – fashion Coloring
I just LOVE these mess – free coloring books! They are perfect for toddlers learning how to grasp and fine motor skills without the worry of them bleeding marker all over the table, rug and their clothes. 👍🏻 These markers are filled with water and the colors on the page magically appear when the water marker is used. It’s genius, and my daughter loves them! You can find them at Target, but I’ve seen them cheaper at Home Goods, and someone told me you can find them at the Dollar Stores as well!

Conventional markers and crayons are also a great idea with lots of supervision! 😆😄
Books, Books, and more Books!

Ok, books are about her favorite things in the whole world (aside from her milk☺️). As I said earlier, I started reading to my daughter from a super young age. I had no idea that she’d fall so in love with them! But when we go to the library, I am very picky with what books I bring home. I know what will keep her attention (pictures and sentence lengths), so I sit and look through children’s books while she plays in the kids area. 😋 Right now, the book series’ that have been big hits are: Llama Llama; Duck and Goose; Ladybug Girl; Books by: Joanna Cold such as, I’m A Big Sister; Books by: Sandra Boynton such as the Little Pookie book series; And books by: Caroline Jayne Church such as, Good Night, I Love You. Board books and picture books are still what we mostly get, and her attention span for more sentences on a page is getting bigger! 🙂

Tea Set

Obviously any tea set will do, but this is the one that she was gifted at her one year birthday. She was too little to play with it at the time, but around 16 months when she kept asking for cups and spoons, I knew it was the time to pull it out! She loves playing “tea” with me, and we even do “cheers!” 😄💖 This set is from the company, Hape. It also comes with a sugar dish and wooden spoon (not pictured). You can find it and more like it on Amazon (link below).

Electric Car
This absolutely adorable and perfect Minnie Mouse electric car was gifted by my dad and mom:) I knew my dad was itching to get my daughter one, and he found this gem at Walmart. You just plug it in to charge up the internal battery. My daughter was a bit timid at first, but now she loves this little car! She zooms through the dining room like a champion driver! I can’t wait till the weather is finally warmer so we can take it outside.🙌🏻 Any ride-able car/scooter at this age will do, but if your toddler likes Minnie, this will be a big win! 😄 You can find it at Walmart.
